IT'S a debate which has raged since the dawn of hair-dye — who has more fun, blondes or brunettes?

It would seem that, for British women at least, the answer is to reach for the bleach.

Four out of 10 women in the UK are blonde but more than 80 per cent are faking it, according to a survey published yesterday.

And there are regional differences, too.

Manchester has the highest proportion of blondes, real or fake, with 45 per cent of women in the northern city golden haired.

Bournemouth has the highest proportion of bottle blondes — only eight per cent of blondies in the southern seaside town are natural.

Cardiff - 36 (1)

Natural blondes only make up 1% of Cardiff's adult female population? Seems to confirm the brunette Welsh stereotype.

Even less, actually. They make up 1% of the blondes, not of the whole female population.

Thanks for the correction. That means, as written in the article, not just Welsh women, the most obvious example, but British women as a whole are overwhelmingly natural brunettes.

If the percentages are accurate (and there's the question of what blonde vs non-blonde means in this case), then GB has big differences in hair color. I wonder what Coon says about it.

Based on the samples provided here, there's a southwest-brunette northeast-blonde pattern (stronger Scandinavian influence?).

From what I understand, blond hair is most common in Finland and surrounding areas of Europe. The further away from Finland you get the less common blond hair becomes. It is not surprising to find that most British blonds are fake since we would expect 50% of the blonds in any population to be male and since blond hair seems to be much more common in British woman than in their male counterparts it is likely that the gender differential is caused by hair dye.

Poor English, being Germans by the language they have the other genes and are nordic-envious.Its funny to see the bbc camera turning brunette in the blond by the help of the sun rays. The Aryan complex of Britains is grievous.

British are much darker than other northern europeans, specially when it comes about hair color. They are also much shorter. Compare you average group of Dutch, Northern germans and Danes where you will be surrounded by giant blondes, anybody darker than lightbrown hair stand out (I have teached in those countries). In england even people with ver dark hair and medium stature do not stand out among natives.

Its like 40-45% of english have medium brown hair, and 35% have dark brown.

I am from an English family in which there are several tall blonds, although I am myself light brown haired and of medium height (180 cm).
